The Greenbelt

The Barton Creek Greenbelt, famously known by locals as “The Greenbelt,” has 809 acres of gorgeous trails, limestone bluffs for rock climbing, and swimming holes. It is a must-visit site for all nature lovers. The first section of the Greenbelt begins near Barton Springs Pool at Zilker Park. It extends southwest to Sunset Valley and to the southern trailhead at Highway 290. It’s centralized downtown location makes it easily accessible and provides trail users the opportunity to explore as much as they want.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

This expansive botanical garden is home to more than 900 species of native Texas plants. It also features a range of educational programs and activities. The center is located 10 miles southwest of downtown Austin at 4801 La Crosse Avenue. It’s aptly named for Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady whose husband, Lyndon Johnson, was the 36th President of the United States. She was also an instrumental driving force behind the creation and growth of the 10-mile trail surrounding Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin.

Texas Capitol

The Texas Capitol is considered one of the most beautiful state capitols in the entire nation. Located at 1100 Congress Avenue, the building has intricate architecture surrounded by sprawling green spaces. You can see the Capitol from several vantage points located throughout the city. It will also serve as your backdrop when you cross the Ascension Seton Austin Marathon or Austin Half Marathon finish line!

Pennybacker Bridge

Pennybacker Bridge, or the 360 Bridge, connects the northern and southern areas of the Loop 360 highway. You can enjoy a scenic drive over the bridge or observe your surroundings from the overlook. Park your vehicle along the northside of the bridge. You’ll have to hike a short distance, but the breathtaking views of Austin and the Texas Hill country are worth it.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is a historic neighborhood of Austin. It has quaint Victorian homes and little bungalows which document over 100 years of the city’s history. Narrow alleys, large trees, and tucked-away parks offer a unique Austin experience. Miles 14-17 of the Austin Marathon course wrap around Hyde Park and provide the perfect race-day tour.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell offers some of the best views in Austin. It is located along the Lake Austin portion of the Colorado River. At the end of a short trail, there is a pavilion at the top which offers expansive views. This is an ideal spot to visit if you want to witness some spectacular sunsets. Mount Bonnell is a popular romantic and picnic spot for tourists and locals alike. Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs!

The James D. Pfluger Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge is a beautiful piece of architecture used by pedestrians and bicyclists in downtown Austin, Texas. The bridge spans over Lady Bird Lake and connects the north and south sides of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail.
